I've been experiencing a recurring issue with Veeam Agent for Windows (free edition) that I've seen across multiple versions, from v6 all the way up to v13.
*The issue:
Whenever I make a configuration change in Veeam Agent (any change — schedule, target folder, job settings, etc.), the saved passwords in Google Chrome and Microsoft Outlook disappear on a PC. And the cookies in Chrome are lost. This does NOT happen on my own PC, which has an identical setup.
*Important details:
- This does NOT happen during regular backups — only after a configuration change in the Veeam Agent UI
- Both PCs run the same Windows version, same Chrome version, and same ESET antivirus
- The issue has persisted across Veeam Agent versions v6 through v13
- The other pc Windows account may not always be actively signed in to a Microsoft account at the time of the change
- No DPAPI errors (Event ID 8196 or 8198) were found in the Crypto-DPAPI operational log
- No S4U scheduled tasks found related to Veeam
*What I've ruled out:
- Regular backup activity (no issue during backups)
- ESET antivirus (both PCs have identical ESET setup)
- S4U logon tasks
- DPAPI master key issues
*My question:
Does Veeam Agent do something specific to VSS writers or Windows security contexts when a configuration change is saved — something different from what happens during a normal backup run?
And could this somehow invalidate saved credentials in Chrome and Outlook on certain configurations?
