Sorry to hear about the challenge with Background Retention on the upgrade.
This is one of the configuration items that the updater will warn about, as this was a situation that definitely was intended to be warned about so it could be avoided. As I understand it from the case, in this situation it was a combination of the legacy backup copy upgrade and the changes to background retention.
