Sorry but that is incorrect - Linux SW RAID is as good if not better than any HW RAID, the latter is on a steep decline.
ZFS on Linux is stable and really solid and good.
Qnap builds shitty boxes, thats for sure but the also build SMB grade and high end storage solutionwhich use Intel or AMD x86 - not everyone needs and can afford NetAPP and the like.
So running a QNAP ZFS based system with iSCSI is a solid solution, it is not craps as lond as the HDDs are server grade, which they are in my case.
